Pool Operational Troubleshooting Guide
19 Most Common Problems

1. Pump will not come on
- Breaker turned off or tripped. Power is off.
- Switch at pump is off.
- Bearings locked up.
- Burned out motor/electrical failure.

2. Motor is noisy

- Bearings corroded.
- Impeller clogged, not allowing water to flow.
- Pump is sucking air.
- Pump basket full of debris/dirty filter.

3. Pump will not prime
- Air leak at inlet plumbing
- Clogged/broken impeller
4. Pool light will not turn on
- Power off. Breaker tripped.
- GFCI tripped.
- Burned out bulb.
- Bad switch.
5. Pool light turns on momentarily, then shuts off.
- Shorted wiring.
- Water inside light assembly.
6. Filter pressure high
- Dirty filter. Clean or backwash.
- Line restriction. Valve closed
- In-floor system is locked up
7. Filter pressure low
- Clogged pump basket.
- Pump sucking air
- Restriction in suction line or cleaner line.
8. Pool cleaner will not move around pool
- Clogged pump basket. Dirty filter.
- Valve not adjusted properly.
- Restriction at pool cleaner.
9. In-floor pop-up heads will not cycle
- Worn actuator assembly.
- Low water flow.
- Worn pop-up heads.
- Valve not adjusted properly.
10. Dirt on floor/cloudy water after vacuuming
- Filter blow-by. Internal damage.
- Old sand. Channeled and not filtering.
11. Low suction when vacuuming
- Clogged pump basket
- Dirty filter.
- Valve not adjusted properly
12. Water around pump while operating.
- Leaking plumbing.
- Worn pump seals.
13. Water hot or boiling in pump pot.
- Air leak. Not sucking water.
- Dirty pump basket/clogged impeller.

14. Heater will not light
- Low gas pressure in lines or tanks.
- Bypass valve not adjusted properly.
- Internal failure.

15. Heater "knocking" and shutting off
- Low water flow.
- Restriction inside heater.
- Valve not adjusted properly.
16. Bubbles coming in pool
- Pump sucking air and delivering to pool.
- Leak at shutdown, filling filter with air.
17. Water level dropping
- Automatic water leveler clogged. Water evaporating.
- Leak at pool lines or shell.
18. Water level rising
- Automatic water leveler float broken. Water filling non-stop.
- Excessive rain.
19. Skimmer lid blows off deck when pump shuts off
- Air leak
